Principal: Ms Julie Ryan Ms Julie Ryan was appointed Principal of Our Lady of Mercy College Heidelberg in January 2005. |
Our Lady of Mercy College traces its beginnings from the Convent of Mercy, Fitzroy, when sisters from there founded the first Convent in Heidelberg in January 1910. They resided at “Roma” a house in Cape Street. In February 1911 they commenced high school classes for boys and girls in “Our Lady’s College”. For many years it was relatively small but in common with many secondary schools began to expand after World War II. Rapid expansion occurred in the 1970s when the College took on its present form.
The College caters in the main for students from Heidelberg, Ivanhoe, Bulleen, Rosanna, Macleod, Greensborough and Doncaster areas, but being well served by public transport, has in recent years accepted students from areas as far away as Mill Park, Whittlesea, Diamond Creek and Park Orchards.
During the period 1910 to 1986 the Sisters of Mercy undertook the administrative task of principal of the College and in 1987 the first lay principal was appointed.
Over the last 8-10 years a wide range of staged renovations and new building works have been undertaken, as well as extensive grounds consolidation and landscaping. The developments have placed the College in an excellent position to meet current and future educational demands. In 1996 a master plan review has defined options and priorities for the next five years.
The College offers a broad range of courses in the Humanities, Science, Technology, Commerce and Creative Arts areas, from years 7 to 12. Most students proceed to post-secondary courses when they graduate from OLMC.
Upon enrolment each student becomes a member of one of the four Sports Houses, managed and led by student house captains and sports delegates. Three of the four house names are significant in their special relationship to Mary, Mother of Mercy – Carmel (green), Loreto (blue) Mercy (yellow), the fourth is named for the foundress of the Congregation - McAuley (red). Sport is an integral part of school life and OLMC provides all students with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports.
The OLMC Mission Statement reflects the mission of the college and binds the whole school community together in the tradition of Catherine McAuley whose gift to us has been the heritage which she passed on to the Sisters of Mercy. Thus we are the inheritors, not only of the school and its spirit but also of the responsibility to carry on Catherine’s work, as Mercy people. The spirit of this College is the true spirit of Mercy.
