Dr John Brick
Board director

John has enjoyed a long association with Mercy. He began teaching in government high schools in the country and city. He moved to St Aloysius College, North Melbourne, in the early 1970s where he was Vice-Principal to Sister Helen Delaney for four years.

In the latter part of the seventies Mercy Teachers’ College, Ascot Vale, established a Grad Dip Ed (Secondary) course and he transferred to Ascot Vale as a lecturer in education with particular responsibilities in teaching methods and field experience for the secondary students.

When Mercy was subsumed into Australian Catholic University in the early nineties he became Head of Department for Educational Foundations in the Faculty of Education in Victoria.

His research interest has been in the area of the nature of schooling systems. He completed a Doctorate in this area and has published in the areas of school ethos and the history, philosophy, and leadership in school cultures.

He retired from full-time work at ACU recently but has continued some lecturing and continues to visit students in schools in the University’s field experience program.

Working within the Mercy ethos at North Melbourne and Ascot Vale was professionally and personally fulfilling and he is very pleased to renew his association with Mercy through membership of Mercy Education.

John has been a Board director since 2006.
